Spiritual Direction

While the name ‘spiritual direction’ could be misunderstood to seem like a coach or some sort of guru guide, it is actually an ancient form of soul friendship that has been practiced in the church for centuries. Incorporating a generous measure of holy listening, I often like to describe the experience as an intentional conversation of three: two humans and the Holy Spirit.

I (Julie) was first invited into the world of spiritual accompaniment, or spiritual direction, in 2019 and it has been one of the most transformational spiritual experiences of my life.

During a months-long journey through the Ignatian Exercises, coinciding with a worldwide pandemic, I had a lot of time to slow down and listen. From there, I discerned that God was inviting me to pursue training for being a spiritual director, or soul friend, for others.

In 2021, I added some formal training to my self-study but was then diverted for a while for personal reasons. Following along a twisty path with unexpected turns and God-inspired re-routes, I’ve picked up my studies again in the past year and will re-launch with a one-on-one accompanient practice very soon.

Spiritual direction sessions are typically scheduled for one hour each month. Please reach out if you’re interested in exploring more – I’d be delighted to hear from you through email: julie.workman@gocommunitas.org
